Our untaught Act of Union

HISTORY is fascinating, and – it not being a double period of Maths – most youngsters in secondary school quite enjoy learning about the social transformations of the Industrial Revolution, the Unification of Germany, and the Battle of Britain. In Kilmarnock Academy we learned all about Ancient Egypt, the Battle of Bannockburn, the Congress of Vienna and Prince Metternich, and left school with Highers thinking ourselves experts.

Working class kids learned skills that would suit us in the workplace, or so that we could fix things for the middle class kids when they became professionals.

Now, after five years of campaigning for independence, there are a growing number of past pupils beginning to think they were short changed. Some, like myself, have become more cynical – thinking it a conspiracy; the use of smoke and mirrors to keep certain details hidden from us. As Scotland continues its progress towards separation from the rest of the United Kingdom, more people have begun to think seriously about how we got into the Union in the first place – and this we were never taught in school.
