In 1970 I appeared, as a very young chair of the local SNP branch, on a platform in Maybole Town Hall with the late Sir Ludovic Kennedy. We were both speaking in support of Sam Purdie, the SNP candidate in the South Ayrshire by-election. The thing that most stuck in my mind was Ludovic’s argument that Scotland will only become truly internationalist if it accepts the responsibility of independence and plays its part in world affairs. He aspired to a Scotland whose voice, however small, would be one of reason and cooperation.
