It is said you can determine the calibre of a man by the company he keeps, which for certain British politicians isn’t very encouraging. However, it is also said that you can tell much about a man from what he wears and so this month I think I may be on to something.
Therefore for this episode I have been considering the symbolism of the patterns in Boris Johnson’s shorts and what this can tell us about the man and about the future. Unfortunately it’s not good news.
In fact it is what we all have feared. The swirling flowery patterns indicate an uncertain future. The placid chrysanthemums (or whatever they are) perhaps suggest a zen-like calmness and meditative state of humanity. Unfortunately, this contrasts with the heavily creased, utilitarian and tea-stained condition of the fabric, with an underlying and distinct dressing to the right.
Furthermore, his paisley-pattern shorts show a longing for the orthodoxy of the religious rhetoric of the DUP, although to be honest the ones with the tiny women in hijabs on them came as a bit of a surprise.
