1 The capital of modern-day Italy, legend has it that Rome was founded by Romulus and Remus in the 8th century BC. The city became the centre of the Roman Empire and then the capital of the Christian world, and its extensive World Heritage site unsurprisingly includes large parts of the historical centre of the city. Just outside Rome there are more sites: the Villa Adriana and Villa D’Este at Tivoli, and the necropolises at Cerveteri and Tarquinia.
