IN SEARCH OF La Bella Figura

Beverley Byrne goes to the Masseria San Domenico on the Adriatic coast of Puglia in her quest for wellbeing

Science confirms that oil and water do not mix. Yet, at the Masseria San Domenico in Puglia, their combined benefits are said to hold the secret of eternal youth.

This family-owned boutique hotel and spa offers a range of treatments based on Thalassotherapy (sea water therapy). Combined with the Mediterranean diet – lashings of olive oil, fresh produce and even pasta and red wine – thalassotherapy can, I’m told, kickstart a lifestyle reboot. Could this be the gateway to achieving a more bella figura?

Opened in l996, this five-star luxury hotel dates back to the 15th century, when the Knights of Malta used the fortified farmhouse (Masseria) as a defence against Ottoman attacks.

Effortlessly instagrammable, its dazzling white walls, piazzas and arched passageways create a tranquil village atmosphere.

Seductive floral scents accompany you on a walk through immaculate tropical gardens leading to a beach bar and alfresco restaurant overlooking the curvaceous swimming pool. There is also a spacious jacuzzi and wading pool, although this is not intended for children – the hotel is strictly adults-only. A private beach on the Adriatic coast is a stroll away through ancient olive groves that supply the Masseria San Domenico with its elixir of life olive oil.

About Italia!

Our writers have travelled around Italy this month to bring you inspiration for your next adventures in 'il bel paese'. Lake Garda is our starting point, an ever-popular destination where quieter corners still remain – if you know where to go. We also head to the hills in Tuscany’s Casentino Forest (whose trees provided the wood for scaffolding to build Brunelleschi’s dome), and if you want to get fit, a healthy spa break in Puglia could be just what you’re looking for.
