SAFE & SECURE

The winter can be a lucrative time for thieves out to steal your valuable gardening kit. Don’t let dark winter nights be an invitation for them. Take a few minutes to improve security around your plot, says KG editor Steve Ott

Allotments can be a perennial problem where security is concerned, but at this time of year vandals and thieves will take advantage of the long, dark nights and lack of activity on the patch to break into poorly protected sheds and outbuildings no matter where they are.

Of course you can’t be on your allotment or in the garden 24/7 to watch over things, but modern technology can certainly help and if you prefer low-tech options, there are plenty of simple ways to make it hard for casual thieves to get at your goodies.

Of course, no one would be daft enough to keep lots of highly valuable tools in an allotment shed unless they were very sure of being able to keep them secure, but home garden sheds and outbuildings may accumulate thousands of pounds’ worth of equipment and garden sundries very quickly, not to mention bikes, garden furniture and barbecues. they are well worth protecting.

SHED SOME LIGHT

The simple things are often the best and one of the most effective ways to prevent theft is to install some good, bright garden security lighting. Thankfully now, with very low energy bulbs and efficient solar panels, you no longer have to be close to a source of power to floodlight your shed should someone come near – and intruders will not want to have a light shining on their activities.
