GORGEOUS GOOSEBERRIES

Seemingly out of favour and neglected, the gooseberry is nonetheless a delicious fruit, says David Patch. It is relatively low maintenance and there are plenty of varieties to choose from

Fads and fashions are as much a part of gardening as they are many other areas of our lives. The most spectacular example is probably tulip mania – the period in the 1630s when tulips became so fashionable and sought after that single bulbs of a new variety would sell for several years’ salary. On a more personal note, I remember my father completely replanting our garden in the late 70s with heathers and dwarf conifers, made popular by Adrian Bloom and his Foggy Bottom garden. And who can forget the decking craze of the late 80s, fuelled by Alan, Charlie and Tommy, the Ground Force team?
