With leaves radiating from its pale green or purple bulbous stem, few veggies are as distinctive as kohl rabi. They are also easy to grow and delicious to eat, as Steve Ott explains

SOW: Feb-July HARVEST: June-Oct PLANT: May

Kohl rabi is highly nutritious and contains lots of vitamin C and B6 as well as copper, potassium and phosphorus plus many other nutrients

Weed the rows regularly to prevent competition

You’ll find this outlandish veg in every seed catalogue, which means that someone must be buying the seeds and yet I know of very few people that have tried kohl rabi (or kohlrabi) to eat. I have a feeling that lots of people buy them on a whim just to give it a try, but wonder howmany make it to the kitchen. This is a shame as they are very versatile, fast to crop and relatively easy to grow. Gardening friends on the continent have no such qualms where these Sputnik-like veggies are much more widely appreciated.
