With no-dig gardening becoming ever more popular you might wonder if the days of the humble garden fork and spade are numbered. Not so, says KG editor Steve Ott

Whether you are a fervent nodigger or love to take to the plot every autumn to turn the soil, you’ll need some digging tools.

This is because the basic kit of a digging fork and spade have so many uses around the garden apart from turning the soil – planting, spreading manure, weeding, raking, levelling, digging holes for constructing new garden features and fences – the list goes on. Of course, it doesn’t stop there – lots of variations on the spade and fork for specialist or more delicate (or heavier) tasks are available. But it’s easy to rush in and to either spend more money than you need to in buying overpriced tools or inappropriate ones that then just clog up the shed for years to come.
