In the spring I sowed some seeds of a heritage runner bean I’d been lucky enough to be given called ‘Black Emperor’ and since there weren’t many, I decided to plant the resulting young plants in my new polytunnel. The plants grew very well, but I became very anxious when at first they refused to flower - would I be the one to lose this apparently rare variety? When they eventually did blossom they were very slow to set and I was worried that I might have a complete failure on my hands.
