Michael Hedges, managing director of The Organic Gardening Catalogue, explains how organic seeds are produced and the vital part they have to play in the development of an eco-friendly future

for a sustainable world

In my 34 years in the organic seeds business two of the most frequently asked questions have been “Why should I buy organic seeds?” and “Are organic seeds better?”

The answer to “Why should I buy organic seeds?” has more to do with the method of production rather than the seeds themselves. Behind every packet of organic seeds is a dedicated organic grower, upholding standards of land and crop management, growing in a sustainable and nonpolluting way free from chemical fertilisers, pesticides and fungicides, and performing a vital function in the circle of food production. Growing seeds carries more risk than growing food crops. The plants are in the ground longer so are therefore subject to more challenges from pests, diseases and the weather, and the process is more labour intensive, with inspections, rogueing (removal of ‘wrong uns’), harvesting, cleaning and testing all adding to the cost. So these people should be applauded and supported.
