GET GOING with GRAPES

Growing grapes might seem a daunting prospect if you’ve never grown them before but don’t be deterred, says Joyce Russell. They’re not as difficult as you might think
Pot-grown plants can be planted out at any time of year

If you ever visited a vineyard and saw rows of immaculate vines dripping with bunches of grapes, or if you stood in a greenhouse or conservatory with a vine that’s trained to fan out along wires overhead, then just for a moment you may have thought: I could never put in that amount of work, but I would love to grow grapes.

Let’s start again! If you ever visited a garden with a grapevine taking over the greenhouse, or if you sat in a conservatory sheltered from the sun by a wildly rambling vine up above, you may have thought: this doesn’t look like the best kept vine in the world, but there are still plenty of grapes hanging down and maybe I could do the same in my greenhouse.

There are many ways to garden and there are many ways to grow grapes. If you fancy giving it a try then don’t be put off by the perfectionist end of things, but do put in a small amount of work so you don’t stray too far into the rambling and unproductive extreme.
