Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep is Hollywood royalty. She’s played everything from a coffee plantation owner in Kenya, to a hotel owner in Greece to a ruthless magazine editor in Manhattan. Here are some of the highlights of her career.

Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) This was Meryl’s breakout role. In the film she plays a mother caught up in a custody dispute. Her co-star, Dustin Hoffman, said of her work ethic, “She’s extraordinarily hardworking, to the extent that she’s obsessive. I think she thinks about nothing else but what she’s doing.” Meryl won her first Oscar for her performance in this film.

Sophie’s Choice (1982) Meryl plays Sophie, a Polish holocaustsurvivor. To prepare for the role she learned to speak German and perfected a Polish accent. Film critic Roger Ebert said of her performance, “This is one of the most astonishing and yet one of the most unaffected and natural performances can imagine.” Meryl won her second Best Actress Oscar for her performance.
