How to paint a sunrise in pastel

How to build a strong composition

Pastel techniques and colours to try

The morning sun rises to greet the day and light so bright it hurts the eyes as it bounces back off the freshly fallen snow. Capturing magical moments like these in pastels was always an inspiration for my art when I lived in Yorkshire. So now, as I live in the south west of the country, where we do not experience this deep crisp snow, I relive the glorious times by reverting to photographs, experience and memories. From these three references, I hope you will join me over the next two issues of LP to produce a sunrise snow scene using the unique Pan Pastels.

I have selected an image from the ones I have on file (below), where the composition is not quite right. Here a hawthorn bush divides the image vertically, which just does not work. However, the photograph was taken to capture the very moment the sun rose over the horizon so my idea is to capture that moment with a more balanced composition. To this end I worked on two charcoal drawings (left), considering different ways to resolve this.
