Painting project

Part 2 Paint a springtime landscape in watercolour, with Jem Bowden

The final compositional sketch, taking elements from the three photographs you see here

Last month we looked carefully at tones and colours of foliage, observing how they appear when looking towards the light. We then combined aspects from three photographs (below and right), using small tonal sketches to arrive at a final atmospheric springtime composition (below).

We now have an uncluttered composition, which conveys a sense of the season through light and atmosphere as much as through the drawing of shape and form.

Please refer to the colour mixes in last month’s introduction to this painting project. As we mix our washes here we will focus on obtaining the correct tones, requiring at times very dilute mixes, and in places very undilute mixes. It will also be a matter of brushwork, as this painting will be good practice at using your brush swiftly on its side, as well as needing a good pointed tip.

About Leisure Painter

Welcome to the July issue of Leisure Painter, aimed at beginners and amateur painters. Subjects covered this month include landscapes, seascapes, urban scenes, portraits, wild and domesticated animals and birds, flowers and natural still lifes. We introduce a short series on painting buildings in pastel and there are also two new painting projects to try: learn how to simplify a busy harbour scene and paint a portrait of a roe deer. From techniques and colours for painting rain, puddles and reflections in acrylic and painting natural textures in watercolour to drawing exercises and step-by-step demonstrations for you to try, we aim to include something for everyone in each issue.
