Parrot Tulips, painted on silk, 111⁄2x81⁄4in. (30x21cm)
Iam often asked why I paint on silk. The colours on silk are so vibrant and I like the lively way the colours move and mix on the surface. It can also be unpredictable and result in some unexpected and interesting effects. If you have never tried it, why not have a go and see what you think?
As with watercolour, you can paint fast and loose, wet in wet, throw in a bit of salt, build up layers of translucent colour on a white background, or produce work that is controlled and projects I usually mount the silk on a frame. If you want to try this method, pin the silk to the back of an old picture frame. Make sure the silk is taut. When your work is finished iron it on the back on a medium heat to fix.
