Summer in the Yorkshire Dales

Add power and drama to a beautiful summer view of the Yorkshire Dales using a variety of acrylic techniques, by Charles Evans

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

How to create effects with brushstrokes

How to use a pre-stain on your canvas to unify the painting

Practise watercolour and oilpainting techniques in the same painting

Ihope you enjoy following this demonstration of a summer landscape and learn some new acrylic techniques along the way.

You will need

Surface

• Canvas 16x12in. (40.5x30.5cm)

Daler-Rowney brushes

• Dalon 11⁄2in. flat

• Sapphire 3⁄4in. flat

• Sapphire No. 8 Round

• Sapphire No. 3 Rigger

Daler-Rowney System 3 acrylics

• Cobalt blue

• Titanium white

• Payne’s grey

• Crimson

• Naples yellow

• Hooker’s green

• Raw sienna

• Burnt sienna

• Raw umber

Step 1

1 Pre-stain your canvas using a large 11⁄2in. brush and fairly weak raw sienna. Don’t be too careful about this; just ensure that the canvas is completely covered.

2 Once completely dry, make a simple outline drawing with no cross-hatching or shading.

Step 2

1 For the sky wash, again using the large 11⁄2in. brush, make a fairly strong mixture of cobalt blue and titanium white. Starting from the top of the canvas and using big bold strokes, begin to paint. Progressively add more white to the mix as you come further down the sky area.
