This month...

…we are agog at how the first 100 issues of this magazine have flown by. As we toast the milestone, we recall the dawning moments, pub debates and occasional chaos that went into putting the first issue (top left) together. Five of the founding staff members remain today, a testament to what a pleasure it has been to produce articles for such diverse, fun readers. You’ll find some of the highlights of our team’s adventures over the past eight-or-so years on p64. At the heart of what we do at Lonely Planet is a belief that travel is a force for good, a point that has been underscored in recent weeks. Our CEO Daniel Houghton spoke at the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, about how travel can contribute to peace, and LP’s founders Tony and Maureen Wheeler received a lifetime achievement award from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation. That’s them bottom right, on the across-the-world journey back in 1972 that led to the dreaming up of Lonely Planet in the first place.

About Lonely Planet Traveller (UK)

In the April issue… Join us as we celebrate the 100th issue of the magazine, and look forward to the next hundred. For the occasion, we've found a unique destination for our Great Escape – Madagascar, an island that is almost a world in itself. Other features take in film directors' favourite shooting spots in Paris; the Bay Area of California on the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love; and Lisbon, a city best understood through the Portuguese emotion of 'saudade'. Plus, discover our magazine staff's most memorable moments in putting together 100 issues, and much more
