SIGHTS

Captain Cook Memorial Museum £

(cookmuseumwhitby.co.uk; Grape Lane, Whitby)

James Cook lodged as a young apprentice in this Whitby ship owner's house, now a fascinating museum with Cook's own maps and letters, etchings from the South Seas, and a model of the Endeavour, with the crew and stores all laid out for inspection.

Castle Howard ££

(castlehoward.co.uk)

You'll have to try hard to find a home as breathtakingly stately as Castle Howard, a work of theatrical grandeur set in the rolling Howardian Hills. This is one of the world's most beautiful buildings - if you can, visit on a weekday when it's quieter. Don't miss Vanbrugh's Temple of the Four Winds and Hawksmoor's stately mausoleum.

Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal ££

(fountainsabbey.org.uk)

The 12th-century ruins of Fountains Abbey, framed by the water gardens of Studley Royal, form a World Heritage site. A choice of scenic walking trails lead off from the abbey ruins and offer great views of the Romanesque cloister from above.
