Here comes the sun

Discover an unusual side to Sydney through the lens of photographer Charlotte Curd, as she sets out to capture moments of calm in the daily life of her home city

‘This is Maroubra Beach from above. It was shot from the cliffs on the coastline at about midday. I wanted to record this scene because of the way it splits into three distinct sections: the sand, the foam and the waves.’

I moved to Sydney about a year ago, from Taranaki on New Zealand’s North Island. These photographs reflect how I’ve grown to know and love this city. They document some of the many opportunities and surprises that Sydney has to offer. From watersports on Maroubra Beach to Jervis Bay’s wildlife, to the art that lines the streets of Newtown, I’m pretty sure everyone could find something to like here. One of my favourite things to do is float on water and that weightless sense of freedom is something that I aim to capture in my work. It’s very typical of Sydney’s culture – the popular Icebergs Pool in Bondi is a prime example of how prevalent swimming is in locals’ everyday lives. Beyond that, I like to chase ephemeral, fleeting things in my photography. Changing light, birds in flight – these transient aspects of what I see are what interest me most, given that the city is so fast-paced. Above all, though, the chief character in my photographs is colour. Colour is my subject just as much as it is my medium. The luminous Sydney sky is what gets me up in the morning and its ever-shifting shades are the key motivation for my photography.
