Back in the early 90s, it was becoming harder and harder to dig up the black gold locally to my Brixton base. As a professional dealer, I had to be inventive, as competition was fierce. Fellow diggers had also worked out that my locale was a living vinyl goldmine due to its rich history. So, I had to start thinking laterally.
I’d recently found an obscure Afro-Jazz album for a quid while digging in a house clearance called Son Of The Soil by jazz cat Julian Bahula. This guy was a massively well-respected South African percussionist, drummer and band leader, who had played with such luminaries as saxophonist Dudu Pukwana and UK jazz legends Dick Heckstall- Smith and Ian Carr. My research also told me he had played at Nelson Mandela’s 65th birthday celebrations.
