MICHAEL SPENCER JONES

The covers of Oasis’ first three albums became as iconic and memorable as the songs Noel Gallagher crafted. Teri Saccone meets the man who created them, photographer Michael Spencer Jones

COVER STAR

Michael Spencer Jones is a visual risk taker who pushes boundaries with record sleeve art and portraits. Famed for his work with Oasis and he Verve, Jones’ disruptive approach is visceral, oten mischievous and consummately authentic. His images luently mirror the music they represent.

Jones shot the memorable cover for Oasis’ 1994 debut Deinitely Maybe. He later submerged a Rolls-Royce in a swimming pool for 1997’s Be Here Now, the fastest-selling album in British history, shiting one million copies in its irst two weeks. Later this year, his Masterplan25 exhibit of Oasis images will open across the UK.

A finely nuanced artist, Jones’ infatuation with photography began at the age of 12 via an anniversary issue of Life magazine his dad bought which, he explains: “Contained every aspect of photography in its pages: reportage, fashion, still life, infra-red techniques and much more, I was instantly fascinated. that you can capture one second in time forever amazed me.At school, I was very science- orientated. But at the age of 16, I suddenly became interested in the arts. Photography was perfect because it’s where art meets science.”
