MICROSOFT CAN’T STOP FIDDLING with the interface on Windows 11. In a recent Insider build, it let slip that it was removing features in the folder options for File Explorer. There were nine options for the chop, including showing drive letters, hiding OS files, file icons in thumbnails, and pop-up descriptions. You could, it reassured users, restore the features if you delved into the Registry, but that’s hardly practical. Microsoft included the changes in the build to gather feedback, which it got: a resounding no. Given the strength of the push-back, Microsoft decided to ditch all the changes. As it claimed, “We will often try things out and get feedback and adjust based on the feedback we receive”. It may be small, but it feels like a victory. File Explorer is a fundamental part of Windows that everybody uses, and removing useful features did not go down well.
