THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE has filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Google, the largest case since Microsoft found itself in hot water over 20 years ago. The accusation is that Google’s search and advertising “empire” is against federal anti-trust laws. Google has nearly 90 percent of the search market. This market dominance was achieved, according to the DoJ, by “problematic” business practices. These include simply paying companies large amounts to be the default search engine. Google’s reach has enabled the company to enrich itself through advertising, strengthening its grip on the market, making it tough for competitors, stifling innovation, and reducing consumer choice.
