As I mentioned in the previous issue, I’ve been lucky enough to receive my first headphone DAC/amps to review, but with that comes a major gripe. When it’s time to send them back, I am definitely going to have to buy my own. Once I’ve experienced something that good, I can’t settle for anything less. This job is sure going to cost me a lot down the line, because I’m lucky enough to be around the latest tech all the time. The extra detail that’s picked up by the DAC/amps is something that I cannot live without, unfortunately; it’s just too good. I recently had to send back the VR systems I’d been looking at, which was a sad day. And, yes, you guessed it, I now need a VR system in my setup, too. Luckily, I used them as much as I could while I had them in.
I also mentioned in last month’s “Lab Notes” that I’ve retrofitted a budget Apple CarPlay system using an Amazon Fire HD tablet in my car. It works great, but I need to overcome one problem: I can’t charge my tablet at the same time, due to the USB C port being taken up by the Apple CarPlay dongle. I’ve tried a USB C hub, but it doesn’t allow for pass-through charging. Grrr. I’m going to spend this month trying to bypass this and hopefully, by next issue, it’ll be sorted.
