A recent study found athletes who regularly drink energy drinks, and use gels and energy bars, have higher rates of oral disease – despite brushing their teeth more frequently than most people.4 Previous findings have suggested elite athletes may have a higher risk, because intensive training dries the mouth. Taking extra precautions – high fluoride toothpastes, mouthwashes, flossing as well as regular dental checkups – is recommended.
