There’s nothing like a good cup of coffee first thing to get your mind motivated for the day ahead. Unless you don’t like coffee, that is. Or perhaps you have a big evening meeting or late-night gym session planned, so you need to be fully focused but don’t want to suffer from the caffeine jitters or affect your sleep. Don’t worry, because science has provided a solution. Simply looking at a cup of coffee, or even just something that reminds us of coffee, stimulates the brain to become more alert and attentive without the stimulating effects of caffeine, according to research from the University of Toronto. Looking at tea didn’t have the same effect, though, so focus on beans rather than leaves and you’ll fire yourself up with no need for a kettle.
