Inside the mind of… Natasha Devon

What is the biggest challenge you are facing at the moment?

The lack of service provision – for everyone, but especially for young people. CAMHS has been slashed by a conservative estimate of £80 million since 2010 and the government ‘investments’ since then have not been ringfenced, meaning they are often ‘lost in transit’ and spent on other local authority priorities.

The net result is waiting lists for therapy of anywhere between six months and two years, ever-spiralling thresholds to ‘qualify’ for care, A&E and police services having to step in and provide mental health care they aren’t qualified to deliver and children being put in inpatient facilities hundreds of miles from home.

If mental health falls broadly into three layers – prevention, mental health first aid and medical support – but the top layer isn’t functioning effectively, then everything else falls apart, too.
