Welcome to the October/ November edition of Mental Health Nursing. In academia this is the time of year where the new mental health nursing students embark upon their three-year pre-registration nursing courses.

My campus at the University of Huddersfield is brimming with energy, excitement and anticipation, with students of all disciplines filling the concourse and corridors.

The mental health nursing students experience this but it’s slightly conflicted too. During their ‘freshers’ week they are inducted into the status and reputation of nursing as a profession while being invited to take part in the opportunities to engage in university life. This message is heard but the understanding can take the full duration of the course and beyond to truly embed.
