The protests came after the longtime leader fired his vice president and tried to detain Zimbabwe’s leading military commander. Many speculated the moves were part of a plan for Mugabe’s wife, Grace, to succeed him, and on November 15, the military put Mugabe under house arrest, and the president’s party later expelled him. It was a coup in everything but name; the 93-year-old is still technically president, as the military has tried to provide him with a graceful exit. As of publication, however, he continued to cling to power. Or at least the illusion of it.
