Pescara del Tronto, Italy—Rescuers work through the rubble on August 24 after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in the early hours killed at least 290 people in central Italy and flattened several small towns where the historic buildings, lacking modern seismic protections, crumbled. Amatrice was among the hardest-hit places, with its mayor saying three-quarters of the town had been wiped out. The epicenter was relatively shallow, at around 2.5 miles, which made the damage more severe.
