Tragic loss of historic buildings
IN 1838, three years after he bought Drimnin Estate from the Macleans, Banffshire landowner Sir Charles Gordon committed an act of unforgiveable vandalism when he demolished the medieval castle of Drimnin to make way for a private chapel.
Beating swords into ploughshares is all very well but when you are ‘the new kid on the block’ and from a different culture too, it just isn’t on to mock the local clan by razing its ancient power house to the ground -especially the Macleans who were, and still are, a pretty proud and fiesty lot in these parts.
