MANY happy returns were the order of the day at Portnahaven two weeks ago when the veteran Mòd gold medallist and village resident Donald M MacLeod celebrated his 90th birthday.
Donald was born in Glasgow on May 11, 1926, but was soon back in the Rhinns village where he has spent his boyhood and adult life.
A Gaelic-speaking community saw him developing a lifelong interest in the language and songs of the Gaels. His singing career began in 1939 when he took first place in the junior section at the island provincial Mòd.
