New Year, and many of us will be looking to 2017 with trepidation. It seems that seldom a day goes past without some new tragedy or atrocity hitting the headlines. Can we really go on believing in a faithful, loving God whose mercies are new every morning? Do we truly believe in a God who became vulnerable, came to earth as a baby and experienced all that human existence could throw at him and who is able to save the world? Or shall we just pack God away amongst the tinsel with the baby Jesus and the rest of the crib figures and sweep him away with the Christmas tree needles and torn wrappings and leftover food? Even for an eternal optimist like myself, I have struggled to find genuine, authentic words of hope and inspiration to share for this year to come. Until, that is, Desmond Tutu’s words came to mind:
