Patient power

When a patient enters your dental practice, it is likely that they have done their research. Social media and reviews have done much to educate the patient. It is not just a flashy website that will entice them - there is so much more to consider. Recommendations from family and friends, the look of your practice, Instagram, forums…it’s a jungle out there. And with the rise of adult orthodontics, there is a lot of competition too.

And to top this off, there is the big elephant in the room - the rise of DIY orthodontics, or teledentistry. I’m sure you have all witnessed the adverts online and on TV, promising quick and easy ways to straighten your teeth without even seeing a dentist. And this is with the added bonus of being cheaper too. There are also numerous videos on YouTube on how to straighten your teeth using wires or elastic bands. You can see how enticing this would be for the budget/image conscience person. The Oral Health Foundation and the British Orthodontic Society addressed this alarming growing phenomena at September’s BOC conference in Glasgow.
