A swimming club from Yorkshire has helped knock South Africa off the top of the international ice mile table by completing an incredible 22 Ice Miles in recent months, the highest number recorded anywhere in the world at a single club. Yorkshire Outdoor Swimmers now lead the world in Ice Miles and their base at Harthill reservoir is officially the leading ice mile swim centre on the planet.

Members of the club have officially completed 29 Ice Miles, more than half of the UK’s overall total of 54. One of the Yorkshire club’s swimmers, Wendy Figures, became the world’s leading female ice miler when she completed her fifth Ice Mile in 35 minutes 27 seconds.

About Outdoor Swimmer

As spring finally arrives, it is time to start planning your summer swims. We have features on wild swimming in Spain and Florida and full event listings for races in the UK and around the world. Plus, we report from Russia and the UK on the final flurry of the season’s cold water swimming competitions. In this issue’s performance zone, as well as all the usual training and nutrition advice, we teach you how to master easy butterfly. This issue we celebrate a true pioneer of the open water: Mercedes Gleitze, the first British woman to swim the English Channel, was an independent working class woman who promoted open water swimming to a new audience.
