SWEET FLAG
An inconspicuous exotic with a long history of medicinal uses.
By Susanne Masters
SWEET FLAG MIGHT HAVE A ROLE IN REMEDYING DAMAGE THAT HUMANS CAUSE TO ECOSYSTEMS
Green lowered, green leaved, blending into water edges, and visually outshone by more lamboyant looking plants, Sweet Flag (Acorus calamus) is easily missed by a swimmer’s gaze. But if you get to know this humble plant you may observe it with awe and delight as you understand its ecological sway, medicinal power and appreciate its lavour.
