The landscape of how we talk about men and women is changing. The gender gap has been a hot topic in the media this year. Daily news talks about difference in pay, treatment, work and attitudes. It is no surprise that the discussion is seeping into the outdoor world and Abi Andrew’s debut novel, The Word for Woman is Wilderness, tackles the subject head-on.

“I have this thing that bothers me about how often when women write about the outdoors and their experience of it the books become self-help”, says Abi. “If a man had written Eat, Pray, Love or Wild they would have been great adventure stories. When I was researching the book I was trying to find examples of women writing about this kind of stuff and the market was full of things like, Pink Boots and a Machete: My Journey from NFL Cheerleader to National Geographic Explorer. It was like the wilderness wasn’t accessible to women unless something had happened to them.”
