5 minutes with… Caroline Block

In July, 32-year-old anthropologist Caroline Block from Baltimore swam the English Channel. Two weeks later she swam the North Channel, becoming the second woman to complete both channels in the same season

How did you first get into outdoor swimming?

When I was 14, I was recruited to be part of a relay to try and break the world record for a junior, two-way crossing of the English Channel. I am not sure why I was selected for this, but it seemed like it would be fun, so I said yes. I had never been open water swimming before, but a group of us trained in Florida for a month, and then went over and completed the two-way, breaking the world record in the process. We landed right on the Cap, but no one had told us anything about the tides, etc, so I had no idea it might be tough to get in. We were just there to swim!
