HISTORY OF SWIMMING

If you want to rack up some really big mileage in short order, it’s best to swim with a strong current.

And where can you find the best, most predictable currents? In rivers, naturally. Although many humans have lost their lives in the surging boil of a strong river current down the ages, for the practised swimmer, the experience of travelling swiftly with a swell of river water can be thrilling, easing the burden of swimming much the way walking briskly on a moving walkway at the airport seems to lighten the load.

Rivers abound across the globe, but several of the most storied in marathon swimming history crisscross the varied terrain of Argentina. The eighth largest country in the world, Argentina spans the Andes Mountains in the west where it borders Chile. To the north lie Bolivia and Paraguay. To the east, the South Atlantic Ocean. At its southernmost end, Argentina borders the Drake Passage, across which lies Antarctica.
