Solving the labyrinth

What happens if illness means you are suddenly unable to swim? Becky Horsbrugh overcame labyrinthitis to get back in the water

I was on a high. The previous day I’d swum the Messina Straits with some friends, from Sicily to mainland Italy. It had been a beautiful swim; just the right temperature and distance to be fun and not too taxing, and lovely warm weather. I’d then made my way down to Siracusa to stay with some friends who live there. It was early evening and we were relaxing after a long day on the beach. Life couldn’t have felt more perfect, when suddenly it seemed like the room had tilted 180 degrees. Seconds later I felt like I was in a washing machine on a fast spin. The walls, the floor, everything seemed to be moving and it didn’t stop. I had no idea what was wrong. Maybe a stroke, or had it been the sun? Whatever it was I was terrified, as were my friends. I felt like this for the rest of the evening until I eventually fell asleep, exhausted, on the floor as I could hardly move. The next morning when I woke the spinning had gone, but I felt like I was in a ship in a rough sea. I could hardly walk and had overwhelming nausea.

About Outdoor Swimmer

In our fifth anniversary issue we take a look back at the first five years of H2Open magazine as well as looking to the future and asking ,where will swimming take you in 2016? Whatever your level of swimming, there is a challenge out there for you! If that challenge is a winter swimming competition, we have plenty of top tips and expert advice on swimming in icy water. But if the cold doesn’t really do it for you, we have destination reports from sunny Bermuda and the German lakes. In this issue we also profile four young BLDSA swimmers as well as catching up with open water swimming champions Keri-anne Payne and Cassie Patten. Plus all the usual training, technique and nutrition advice and gear reviews. Happy swimming!
