Seven stages of a swim streak

Have you got the stamina to swim every day? Deborah Durbin and swimmers from the Facebook group weswimBecauseweCan set themselves the swim streak challenge of becoming mile-a-day champions

How often do you swim? Perhaps a couple of training sessions a week and a longer swim at the weekend? If you’ve got an event to build for, maybe you up your training to five or six sessions a week. How about taking on a slightly different type of swimming challenge? For how many consecutive days could you swim a mile? Swimmers, meet the the swim streak.

In the running community the run streak is well established, inspired by British running legend Ron Hill, who has run every day since 1964. It is a challenge that transfers easily to swimming. Set your distance and timeframe and then swim every day. The group WeSwimBecauseWeCan set their minimum distance as a mile. After all, swimming a mile a day can’t be that difficult – until you consider the possible implications on your social life, your family and your health. No rest days makes for a pretty intense training schedule. Plus, to run every day you just need to put on your shoes and open your front door; swimmers have to find suitable water before they can even start their daily challenge.

The WeSwimBecauseWeCan group took on the mile-a-day swim challenge for 30, 100 or 365 days. Between them they swam 2852 miles and raised more than £23,500 for cancer and other charities. How did these regular people turn into swim streak champions? They followed the Seven Stages of a Swim Streak.
