Dan Bullock explains why your swim needs to start before you hit the water

I f you’re anything like many of the swimmers I see at training you will have just stumbled out of bed, perhaps grabbed a coffee on the way to the pool or the lake, changed and shuffled bleary-eyed to the water’s edge. Alternatively, you may have just finished work hunched all day over a computer, left at the last minute, eaten a sugary snack in the car, arrived late and flustered and then dived in expecting to produce a top performance.

Strangely, that doesn’t happen. In fact, it might easily take 15 to 20 minutes before you start to feel at ease in the water. Some swimmers only fully hit their stride after 45 minutes or so – and if you’re doing an hour-long session it’s almost time for the cool down so you only get a few minutes of training at your optimum performance level.

In an open water race, it can be even worse. For a good club swimmer, a mile can be done in 20 to 25 minutes – barely time to warm up. You might think it doesn’t matter so much in a longer race, but it does – especially if you’re competitively minded. Races often start fast and furious and the pack of swimmers you want to draft may be long gone by the time you get up to speed.
