Stor my weat her

Twenty four years ago Channel swimmer Thomas Noblett lived on bermuda. he was a non-swimmer who feared open water. now, not even a hurricane could stop him returning to the island to take part in the bermuda round the Sound Swim

It took me a nanosecond to make the decision to enter the Bermuda Round the Sound Swim 2015.

This might have been because my normal training pool, Lake Windermere, hadn’t warmed up to the kind of temperature that I’ve enjoyed in recent years, due to a poor summer and chilly temperatures. In fact, we’d only had a couple of weeks when it reached 15 degrees Celsius, making the prospect of swimming in 28 degree water very inviting. But it wasn’t only the swimming that decided me. Nostalgia drew me back to Bermuda: 24 years ago I’d enjoyed five happy years living on the island. Ironically enough, while living there I’d probably only swum in the sea around a dozen times. This was partly because in those days I was a non-swimmer with a fear of open water. Therefore, I’d really only jumped in, splashed around a bit and quickly hopped back out, not venturing farther than five or 10 metres from shore. What a waste!

About Outdoor Swimmer

In our fifth anniversary issue we take a look back at the first five years of H2Open magazine as well as looking to the future and asking ,where will swimming take you in 2016? Whatever your level of swimming, there is a challenge out there for you! If that challenge is a winter swimming competition, we have plenty of top tips and expert advice on swimming in icy water. But if the cold doesn’t really do it for you, we have destination reports from sunny Bermuda and the German lakes. In this issue we also profile four young BLDSA swimmers as well as catching up with open water swimming champions Keri-anne Payne and Cassie Patten.
