LIDO REVIVAL

Keeping Lidos afloat financially is never easy, but there are a growing number of ambitious revival projects aiming to make the most of their heritage, community and wellbeing value, reports jonathan Knott
Proposed lido at Twickenham

At the Lido, Bristol, the sun reflects off gently rippling water as a handful of people swim up and down the pool and others look on through the glass wall of the café alongside it. For many, the calm here is a chance to take a breather from city life.

The pool recently hosted a conference of the Historic Pools Association, bringing together representatives from both indoor and outdoor swimming pools. These included Sandford Parks Lido, which secured its future after being taken over by a supporter-led charitable company in 1996. Another was Saltdean Lido, which, having been saved from being turned into flats by a local campaign, will re-open in Easter 2017 following ongoing restoration work that has been helped by a £4.7m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

About Outdoor Swimmer

There is wild swimming and there is really wild swimming. This issue we bring you some pretty extreme swimming from the Arctic Circle. It is thrilling stuff, but if you like your thrills a little more genteel then check out our feature on swimming walks in Devon. Elsewhere in the mag we are feeling pretty zen: breathe deeply and read our features on yoga for open water swimmers and the benefits of mindful swimming. Not all of us are lucky enough to live near the open water. For many, me included, our regular dose of outdoor swimming is from our local lido. We look at the lido revival that is taking place around the country. As well as more event reviews and event listings than ever before we also have tips on better backstroke from Terry Laughlin, how to train with paddles from Fiona Ford and Ed Williams teaches you how to bounce back from failure. Plus, gear reviews, nutrition and loads more!
