Richard Harpham explores the Canadian wilderness in Ontario

I am a self-confessed ‘water baby’. Much of my life has been spent windsurfing, kayaking and canoeing and I have completed over 9,500 miles of human-powered adventures.

Last year I had the opportunity to explore the Canadian wilderness in Ontario as part of a trip to understand Canadian canoe culture. My wife Ashley is a keen wild swimmer and I have followed her lead, swimming in rivers and lochs throughout the year.

We arrived in Ontario to explore Algonquin Park and to race in the Muskoka River X canoe race before heading off into the Temagami wilderness. The Temagami wilderness park was saved by our hosts Hap and Andrea Wilson, whose publicity and direct action campaign stopped the logging companies. This ancient pine forest was our home for eight remarkable days last September that fortuitously coincided with an Indian summer. Temagami is the traditional home of the Objibwe First Nation people and is a deeply spiritual and remote location. Our mission was to canoe 60km through the back country waterways, portaging waterfalls and rapids, and paddling lakes to a remote cabin at the aptly named Cabin Falls. We decided to make each day an opportunity to wild swim in iconic and beautiful locations.
