John Weller and Lola Culsán explore wild swimming spots in north-west Spain
Galicia is a wild swimmer’s paradise

Water defines Galicia. Its fresh green fertility fills your nose; you can almost taste the chlorophyll. Driving to wild swimming spots, the gorse and heather-covered hills and mossy dry-stone walls suggest we are in Derbyshire or Cornwall, tall palm trees remind us we’re on the Iberian peninsula.

Tucked away in the north-western corner of Spain, this ‘land of a thousand rivers’ is a wild swimmer’s paradise and we discover new watery pleasures each time. According to local legend, the god Jupiter fell in love with Galicia’s beauty. To bind her to him, he pierced the land with a river, the Río Miño. In a jealous rage, his wife Juno disfigured Galicia’s ‘face’ to lessen her husband’s ardour, making deep cuts in the earth and filling them with water. Juno’s plan backfired as the rivers and pools only increased her radiance and allure.
