‘My family call me ‘Crazy Lady’’

Marathon swimmer Helen Beveridge

Helen Beveridge started open water swimming five years ago when a friend asked her to join a SwimTrek holiday. In August, the 48-year-old construction manager and mother of three became the sixteenth person to swim Loch Ness according to British Long Distance Swimming Association (BLDSA) rules (goggles, swim cap, swimming costume). The water temperature ranged from 11.7C to 14.2 degrees Celsius and the 22.5-mile swim took Helen a monster 18 hours and 22 minutes.

Best thing about open water swimming?

I love the variety – from the solitude of long solo swims to sociable fun and wavy frolics with a group of friends to the excitement of exploring new swim locations.

About Outdoor Swimmer

In this issue we explore wild swimming in Scandinavia, where the right to roam extends to swimming outdoors – in some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery. We also bring you reports from some our favourite events of the summer – more swims for you to add to your bucket list! We hear from Howard James and Sabrina Wiedmer about their record breaking swims – the earliest (and coldest) English Channel crossing and the first woman to cross the Dál Raita Channel, respectively. And if that all sounds a bit too hardcore and serious, Dan Abel shows us how to keep our swimming fun. Enjoy the magazine and happy swimming.
