SIMON SAYS

Adding more open water events to the Olympic programme will increase interest in the sport, says Simon Griffiths

While the pre-race media-fuelled horror stories of swimming through raw sewage never materialised, the Olympic marathon swim wasn’t without its problems. Firstly, the start pontoon broke anchor and vanished. Secondly, and more contentiously, were some of the refereeing decisions as demonstrated by team GB’s Jack Burnell’s outburst following his disqualification. The women’s race was also marred by the disqualification of 2015 world champion Aurélie Muller of France who clashed with Italy’s Rachele Bruni in the final metres. In addition, competitors spoke of grabbed legs, elbows in ribs and other unwanted and unwarranted physical contact taking place below the water line, out of sight of the judges.

About Outdoor Swimmer

In this issue we explore wild swimming in Scandinavia, where the right to roam extends to swimming outdoors – in some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery. We also bring you reports from some our favourite events of the summer – more swims for you to add to your bucket list! We hear from Howard James and Sabrina Wiedmer about their record breaking swims – the earliest (and coldest) English Channel crossing and the first woman to cross the Dál Raita Channel, respectively. And if that all sounds a bit too hardcore and serious, Dan Abel shows us how to keep our swimming fun. Enjoy the magazine and happy swimming.
