Viva! Health Nutritionist Veronika Powell has hit back at claims in the Express that hair loss could be a by-product of eating a plant based diet. The nutrition expert made the comments in an online article on Viva! Health after resident TV doctor Dr. Hilary Jones spoke of a link between iron deficiency and hair loss. He claimed that it is harder to gain enough iron on a plant based diet. Powell stated: “This person is certainly no nutrition expert because those claims just don’t add up and are certainly not fact-based.”
According to the Viva! Health expert the best food sources to consume if you are concerned about the amount of iron in your diet include wholegrains, pulses, dried fruit and nuts and seeds but also pointed out that vitamin C can be important for absorption of the nutrient.
She continued: “The truth is, meat is not the main source of iron in a meat-eater’s diet so not eating meat doesn’t significantly affect the average iron intake.
